It’s easy to lose focus on what the residential real estate industry is all about. In the talk of square footage and quality of the amenities, it’s critical to remember what’s at stake when working in this industry: the lives of the individuals and families who live in these communities.
One amazing project is celebrating its 25th anniversary of being in the WinnCompanies portfolio this year. Castle Square is a 540,000-square-foot mixed-use property in Boston, Massachusetts comprised of 500 affordable apartment units and 20,000 square feet of retail space, constructed during the urban renewal boom of the 1960s. Winn became involved in the property in the late 1980s, when the Castle Square Tenants Association (CTSO) approached the company to become a partner in managing and maintaining the physical structure.
“Castle Square’s residents are deeply invested in their community. It was a pleasure to work with them to learn what was working for them, and what needed to change,” said Arthur Winn.
The community knew green building and conservation was the way of the future. WinnCompanies was honored to partner with CSTO to complete the largest deep energy retrofit in U.S. history. Completed in 2012, this retrofit resulted in a 70% energy savings—far and above the 50% required to meet the LEED® standard. It also made residents more comfortable in their day-to-day lives and preserved this amazing community.
