Thanks to a U.S. Housing & Urban Development program known as HOPE (Homeownership and Opportunity for People Everywhere), we joined with Castle Square tenants to become joint owner of the deteriorating property in 1992. Our renovation of the 500-unit, mixed income property made Castle Square the single most successful HOPE development and won multiple industry awards, including Best Urban Tower and Best Urban Low Rise. After a historic retrofit in 2012, the property was awarded LEED for Homes Multifamily Platinum Certification, the highest possible green building rating.
HOPE partners with groups to implement homeownership programs, thus helping low-income people buy public housing. Neighborhoods flourish when these types of programs are successful. They give low-income families a foundation to build their lives upon. Through HUD and the HOPE program, homeownership is a reality for many families.
Not only did HOPE provide funding for low-income families to purchase public housing, but it also helped to empower families to become self-sufficient. Additional skills and resources HOPE provided include:
- Job training
- Interest rate buy-downs
- Rehabilitation of properties
- Relocation for residents
- Pay for administrative costs and legal fees
- Homebuyer counseling and training
